UPWalker Improves Senior Rehabilitation Outcomes at Senior Rehab Solutions
Senior Rehab Solutions (SRS), headquartered in Dallas, Texas, recently started incorporating the UPWalker® into their rehabilitation program while working with long-term care residents who suffer from mobility issues including back and joint pain from arthritis, stability challenges from neurological impairments, injuries and other debilitating issues. Many of the residents SRS works with are losing their ability to remain active, some have suffered falls while using canes and traditional walkers or rollators, and in addition to feeling trapped indoors, the lack of regular walking impacts their overall health and happiness.
SRS started using the UPWalker in rehabilitation exercise, and it made an immediate improvement with their senior residents.
SRS’s Julie Boyer started trying residents in the UPWalker for rehab treatment, and the results were nothing short of exciting. We wanted to learn more about her team’s rehabilitation work, and this developing story of recaptured mobility and enjoyment, so we interviewed her to see what’s been happening behind the scenes...
Senior Rehab Solutions (SRS) staff member working with a resident in the UPWalker during rehabilitation.
UPWalker: Julie, as you know, we’re on a mission to help those with mobility challenges to rediscover their active lifestyle, health and independence through easier walking, so we can’t tell you how overjoyed we were to hear about the success stories with your residents using the UPWalker! But, we can’t dive into the middle of the story, we have to start at the beginning...What motivates you and your team in rehabilitation work with seniors?
Julie Boyer: Our therapy team chose this setting, because we love helping seniors and their families complete the rehab process and return to their highest level of functional independence possible.
UPWalker: For those who are unfamiliar, can you tell us a little about Senior Rehab Solutions (SRS) and your role there?
Julie Boyer: SRS is a provider of Speech, Physical and Occupational therapy in many settings. I am the Director of Rehabilitation and a licensed Speech Language Pathologist. I provide assessment and treatment for those in need of swallowing and cognitive rehab, and I manage the Physical and Occupational Therapy aspects of our program as well.
UPWalker: Can you share some of the walking challenges your residents face, and how those impact their everyday lives?
Julie Boyer: Challenges include overall physical weakness, loss of sense of space and perception, affecting balance and righting abilities. These combine to increase the risk of falls, among many other causes, such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, orthopedic procedures and neuropathy to name a few.
UPWalker: What about mindset, this is something not everyone talks about. When you’re watching those you work with and they’re struggling to walk normally, how do you think this affects their self-esteem, happiness and outlook?
Julie Boyer: One of the most frustrating things in life is to lose our independence and ability to do things for ourselves. We work to help our residents regain every bit of independence they can, to maintain that sense of self and regain a positive outlook.
UPWalker: We’re eager to hear about what happened when you started including the UPWalker in rehabilitation exercises, what did you observe?
Julie Boyer: At first, our residents were a bit hesitant, but once they were introduced by our rehab team and educated and trained on how to use the UPWalker to assist them in regaining their balance and mobility, they could not get enough!
Residents at Senior Rehab Solutions found that with the UPWalker they could exercise standing with improved balance and mobility, walk easier and farther, and rediscover walking independence.
UPWalker: What types of rehabilitation exercises can you incorporate using the UPWalker now, that perhaps you couldn’t with residents before, and what does this mean in terms of progress for them?
Julie Boyer: We are able to have our residents complete more exercises in the standing position, which is important for their overall health and circulation. We are able to address higher level balance, mobility and endurance tasks than before.
UPWalker: What were some of the things residents said to you after trying the UPWalker?
Julie Boyer: We’ve heard some pretty exciting comments, such as:
“I can finally walk better!”
“Before I could only walk one hallway, but with the UPWalker I can now walk three hallways. I don’t want to use my old walker anymore...”
“The UPWalker has now given me the ability to walk outside around the building, whereas before I could never go outside.”
“I did not think I would be able to walk almost alone again.”
“I feel safer with the UPWalker because it surrounds me.”
UPWalker: It’s heartening to hear what a difference you and your staff are making with the UPWalker. How will this change rehabilitation methodology in the coming year?
Julie Boyer: We are able to utilize the UPWalker with more diagnoses, and in different environments and surfaces, to advance our residents’ progress more aggressively.
UPWalker: If friends, family or caregivers are looking into long term care for a loved one, how can they learn more about SRS online?
Julie Boyer: SRS4rehab.com is our company’s website. We would love for people to learn more about our company and the rehab services we offer to assist their loved ones to regain their function!
UPWalker: Julie, thank you for sharing your story about success with the UPWalker at your facilities! This is the beginning of a gratifying journey for all of us, and we’re proud to be connected with such dedicated people like you and your staff at SRS.
